Crossy Road is certainly one of those games that took inspiration from that hot, viral sensation to create something completely original. While it shares some similarities to its predecessors, The World Of Robocop and Battle Zone, it also has its own unique charm, as well as a cast of interesting characters that really make you think about what you’re actually supposed to be doing at any given moment. After all, who wants to just kill time in a zombie-ridden post-apocalyptic world? Fortunately, the game’s witty characters, great level design, and enjoyable gameplay make up for any similarities.
If you’re looking for something lighthearted and silly, Crossy Road may not be exactly what you’re looking for. But if you’re looking for an enjoyable little time spent with some neat effects and a colorful, cartoon-styled world, Crossy Road is definitely worth a look. For example, one of the most unique things about Crossy Road’s world is its use of “cash” as a currency. Players can spend their cash on different things – vehicles, extra lives, power-ups, or whatever else they want. And since cash can be collected via the use of coins awarded by completing challenges and tasks, Crossy Road creates a fun environment where people can actually become money-minting machines.
Likewise, the various secret characters in the game are a nice addition. You’ll meet some pretty hilarious characters, like the evil frog Frogger (voiced by the great Kevin Clash), the sweet Razzleberry Rogue (voiced by actress Meg Foster), and the foul-mouthed Mr. Whisker (voiced by the great Jeffrey Wiseman). All of these characters are funny in their own, and occasionally odd, ways, which makes them even more entertaining when seen through the Android interface. From the frog Frogger’s penchant for trying to eat his own arm (“I swear it tastes so good”) to Mr. Whisker’s constant need to get into peoples’ pockets, the characters in Crossy Road make for some unexpectedly wacky yet amusing additions to an otherwise simple, albeit odd, game.
When playing Crossy Road, it’s important to keep in mind that certain coins, called “cubes,” will always remain on screen until they are manually taken out of your wallet or taken away by another character. Fortunately, this aspect of the game does not actually require you to spend any money, unlike other, similar games. Naturally, it’s possible to pay to unlock more advanced levels and items, but in the end, it’s always going to be something worth spending your hard-earned cash on. As long as you continue to play through the various challenges and tasks given to you, eventually, you are going to start earning money to buy those special items that you see on the list, and then eventually afford to purchase the cars, houses, etc., that you need to take on more challenging quests and events.
There is one major feature that you really should pay attention to in the in-game store. In this section, you will be able to purchase new Crossy Road items for your character; these include clothes, houses, hats, accessories, and vehicles. The store offers a daily limit of 50 items (with an additional 100 available if you are playing with multiple people), and the prices tend to vary depending on the in-game currency used for purchasing them. Items you purchase are generally only available for a specified amount of time, so if you find that you are running low on either Cash or XP, you may want to consider re-entering the game and picking up some of those last items. That way, when the daily reset occurs, you will have an adequate stock of them to play through the rest of the levels and earn all the money and experience you can handle.
Overall, Crossy Road is a very fun and addictive game. I haven’t found any time during which I could say that I was bored, and most of my time was spent trying to figure out how to get to the next level the fastest. The graphics and sound effects are fairly decent, and I have yet to come across any bugs that would negatively affect my ability to enjoy the game. I rate Crossy Road four stars out of five. If you like racing games with lots of excitement and well-realized physics, then you will love playing Crossy Road.
